Who Should You See for Your Foot Care Needs?
Understanding the Differences Between Foot Care Professionals
When it comes to foot health, several professionals provide care, but their roles and expertise differ. Understanding these differences can help you choose the right provider for your needs.
Chiropodists vs. Podiatrists
Chiropodists and podiatrists are both licensed by the College of Chiropodists of Ontario and specialize in the assessment, treatment, and prevention of foot conditions.
Chiropodists provide comprehensive foot care, including prescribing orthotics, treating skin and nail conditions, administering injections, and performing minor surgical procedures (excluding bone surgery).
Podiatrists, registered in Ontario before July 1993, have a broader scope that includes bone surgery, ordering X-rays, and communicating diagnoses. No new podiatrists have been registered in Ontario since then.
Both professionals offer similar care, but podiatrists trained outside Ontario may have additional surgical capabilities
A chiropodist is your go-to specialist for medical foot care, including minor surgical procedures and ongoing foot health management.
Chiropodists vs. Foot Care Nurses
Foot care nurses provide routine nail and skin care, particularly for individuals with diabetes or mobility issues. They offer services such as nail trimming and basic wound care but do not diagnose conditions or prescribe treatments.
Chiropodists provide advanced care, including medical treatment, surgical interventions, application of ultrasound, laser and shockwave energies, and prescription medications for more complex foot health needs.

Chiropodists vs. Pedicurists
Pedicurists provide cosmetic foot and nail care, including trimming, shaping, and polishing toenails, as well as aesthetic treatments. They are not regulated healthcare professionals and do not assess, diagnose, or treat medical foot conditions.
Chiropody is a regulated healthcare profession that addresses medical foot concerns beyond aesthetics, including treatment for conditions such as ingrown toenails, infections, foot pain, and more advanced foot health needs.
