Step Into Comfort: Your Essential Shoe Buying and Wearing Checklist
When buying shoes, the first question to ask is, "What activity am I buying shoes for?" This ensures you leave the store with footwear that truly meets your needs. Our shoes should be activity-specific, meaning you buy walking shoes for walking and running shoes for running. Choosing the right shoes based on their intended use is key to comfort, performance, and foot health.
You may want to use this checklist while purchasing your new shoes or evaluating the current ones. Avoid wearing shoes that do not meet the below criteria.
1. Toe Box and Shoe shape
The toe box is sufficiently long, broad, and deep for toes to accommodate without pressing them.
A clear space is present between the toe tips and the toe box to avoid cramping of the toes.
The shoes are foot shaped as it provides added comfort.
2. Shoelaces
Shoes have an adjustable lace, strap, or Velcro to fasten them high on the foot.
Always wear shoes with laces fastened as it holds the foot firmly inside the shoe reducing friction, and foot pain.
3. Heel
The heel of the shoe is under 5 cm high as it maintains better balance.
I do not feel my weight is falling forward onto balls of the feet while walking in the shoes.
4. Inner Lining
I feel the inner linings under the heels, top, sides, margins are smooth, cushioned, and comfortable.
I do not feel any pressure or friction between the shoes and my feet while walking in them.
I do not feel any sharp points or uncomfortable spots in either shoe.
5. Purchase Time
Purchase the shoes in the afternoon as feet tend to swell slightly during the day, for a better fit.
Always replace the shoes periodically if they are worn out, or irreversibly dirty.
6. Stockings
Always wear stockings or socks with your shoes to avoid blisters and maintain hygiene.
If your socks have prominent seams, wear them inside out to prevent irritation.
Replace socks with holes promptly to prevent further foot issues.
Finally, avoid being swayed by "Sale" or "Clearance" items unless they meet the specific criteria for your needs. Quality shoes are rarely discounted, and while they may be more expensive, investing in a well-fitting pair will be worth it for your comfort and foot health.
